From Lobos Island boat trips to dunes 4×4 safaris — tested by people who lived here, bookable today.

Activities 7 min read Updated May 2026

In 2025 National Geographic named Corralejo Beach the world's number one — but the sand is only the start. The town sits between the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park (10.5 km of protected dunes) and the volcanic Lobos Island, with reef breaks, kite spots and family attractions filling the days in between.

The essentials: what to book first

If you only have time for a handful of activities, these are the ones locals would book first — in this order.

1. Lobos Island day trip

A 15-minute ferry from Corralejo harbor takes you to an uninhabited volcanic island, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Most tours include snorkeling in turquoise lagoons, a guided walk to the small crater (90-minute round trip), and lunch at the only restaurant on the island.

What to bring: sun cream (no shade), swim gear, water shoes for the rocks, €10 cash for park entry.

Pro tip: the 9am ferry beats the crowds. The 4pm return has the best photos.

2. Corralejo Dunes 4×4 safari

Sunset or sunrise tours across the protected dunes natural park in open 4×4 vehicles. Stops at the highest point for photos, then on toward the Lobos Island viewpoint. Most tours last 3 hours.

Best time: 1 hour before sunset for golden light. Tours from 4pm in winter, 6pm in summer.

3. Surf lessons for beginners

Corralejo is the surf capital of Fuerteventura. ISA-certified schools run group lessons on Flag Beach (Playa de la Bandera), a perfect beginner break with consistent sand-bottom waves. 2-hour sessions include board, wetsuit and shuttle.

What to expect: 30 min theory on the sand, 90 min in the water with an instructor in the lineup. Most students stand up by lesson 2 or 3.

For active travelers

Kitesurfing on Flag Beach

Flag Beach is one of Europe's top kitesurfing spots — steady trade winds 300+ days a year. IKO-certified schools run beginner courses (1–3 days) and rentals for experienced riders.

Snorkeling boat tours

Half-day boat trips to the cleanest snorkeling spots between Corralejo and Lobos Island. Crystal water, fish life, and a stop on a small private cove. Equipment included.

Hiking the Volcán de Bayuyo

Free and DIY. The Bayuyo volcano (271m) is a 1-hour climb just north of town. The crater rim has 360° views over Lobos and the dunes. Best at sunset; bring water.

For families

Acua Water Park

The biggest water park in Fuerteventura, on the main strip into town. 10+ slides, wave pool and kids' area. Best for half-day visits in the morning when queues are short.

Oasis Wildlife Park (Lajares area)

30-minute drive south. Hundreds of animals, parrot shows, camel rides. Often considered the best family day-out in Fuerteventura.

Day trips beyond Corralejo

El Cotillo (35 min by car)

Tiny west-coast village with quieter beaches, sunset cocktail bars, and the best fish restaurants on the island. Perfect afternoon escape.

Lanzarote on the ferry (1h by sea)

Ferry from Corralejo to Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. Day trip option: rent a car on arrival and drive to Timanfaya volcanoes. Same boat ticket, totally different island.

Free things to do

  • Walk the dunes at sunset — start at the Riu Oliva Beach hotel parking
  • Watch the kitesurfers from Flag Beach
  • Visit the lighthouse at Punta del Tostón (north tip)
  • Saturday morning market at the harbor (artisan + food)
  • Free music nights at harbor bars in summer

Quick answers

Is Corralejo good for non-swimmers?

Yes. The town beaches (Playa Chica, Muelle Chico) have calm protected water. The dune beaches are wilder — choose carefully or swim near a lifeguard.

Do I need a car?

For activities with shuttle pickup (most tours), no. For El Cotillo, Lajares, or surf spots in the north, yes — rental from €25/day.

How early should I book?

Lobos Island ferry: 1–2 days ahead in peak season. Dunes safaris: usually fine same-day in low season. Surf/kite lessons: 3–5 days ahead in summer.
