Best Beaches in Corralejo: Locals' Top 10 (2026)

Beaches · 5 min read

The best beaches in Corralejo

From the world-famous dunes to hidden coves only locals know — 10 beaches ranked.

Beaches 5 min read Updated May 2026

In 2025 National Geographic named Corralejo Beach the world's best. But Corralejo has more than one beach — and the right pick depends on whether you want crowds, calm water, surf, or solitude.

The town beaches: walk from the harbor

Playa Chica is the small protected cove right in town — calm water, sand bottom, good for kids and snorkeling. Muelle Chico next to it is where locals jump from the rocks. Both are 2 minutes from the main square.

The Dunas beaches: where the postcard photos come from

Starting 3 km south of town: Playa del Moro, Playa del Pozo, Playa del Bajo Negro, Grandes Playas. 10.5 km of golden dunes meeting Atlantic. Bring a windbreak — the trade winds here are constant.

The surf beaches: north of town

Flag Beach is the famous one for kitesurf and beginner surf. El Hierro and Bristol have bigger waves for intermediate surfers.

Hidden picks

Playa de la Concha on Lobos Island (boat needed) is arguably the most beautiful. Majanicho beach has wild atmosphere and few visitors. Playa de los Charcos is a tidal pool wonderland 4 km north.

Lobos Island Day Trip from Corralejo: Complete 2026 Guide

Day Trip · 6 min read

A day on Lobos Island

Boat from Corralejo, hike the crater, snorkel the lagoons. The complete guide to Fuerteventura's volcanic neighbor.

Day Trips 6 min read Updated May 2026

Lobos Island sits less than 2 km off the north coast of Fuerteventura, a 15-minute ferry from Corralejo harbor. Uninhabited, protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and home to one of the cleanest snorkeling spots in the Canary Islands.

How to get there: the practical bit

Three ferry operators run between Corralejo and Lobos: Naviera Nortour, Líneas Marítimas Romero and Carmen Cabrera. Tickets cost €18–25 round-trip in 2026. The 9am departure beats the heat; the 4pm return has the best light.

Reserve in advance — the island has a daily visitor cap of 700. Online booking opens 30 days before. In summer it sells out same-day.

What to do once you're there

Three things define the Lobos experience: the crater walk (90 minutes round trip, 360° views from 127m), the lagoons at Playa de la Concha (snorkel paradise, knee-deep turquoise water), and lunch at the only restaurant, Antoñito el Farero — book ahead or expect a wait.

What to bring

Sun cream (no shade), 1.5L of water minimum, swim gear, water shoes for the rocks. The crater hike needs proper footwear, not flip-flops. The visitor center sells permits and gives free maps.

Best Time to Visit Corralejo: Month-by-Month Guide

Planning Guide · 4 min read

Best time to visit Corralejo

Month-by-month weather, crowds and prices in Fuerteventura's most popular town.

Planning 4 min read Updated May 2026

Corralejo is a year-round destination — it rarely drops below 18°C even in January, which makes it the most popular winter-sun spot for UK and German visitors. But the right month for you depends on what you want to do: surf, kitesurf, beach lounge, or just escape winter.

The short answer

  • Best weather + lowest prices: October–early November and March–April
  • Best for winter escape: December–February (UK/German peak)
  • Best for kitesurfing: May–August (strongest trade winds)
  • Most crowded: Christmas/New Year and July–August
  • Avoid: nothing — every month has something going for it

Month by month

January & February — peak winter sun

18–22°C, mostly sunny, 5–7 hours of sun daily. Sea is 18°C (chilly but doable with a 4/3mm wetsuit). UK and German visitors are everywhere — the harbor restaurants are full at lunch. Hotels are pricier than autumn.

Good for: escaping European winter, beach walking, surfing with a wetsuit. Bad for: swimming without a suit, hoping for empty beaches.

March & April — the sweet spot

20–24°C, very sunny, sea warms to 19°C. Crowds thin out after Easter holidays. Often the best balance of price and conditions.

May & June — wind season starts

23–26°C and the trade winds (alisios) start blowing reliably. Kitesurfers arrive. Beach conditions become more "wind blown" — still gorgeous but bring a windbreak.

July & August — busiest, hottest

26–29°C, very hot in the middle of the day, but strong trade winds make it bearable. Spanish families arrive. Book accommodation 8+ weeks ahead. Lobos Island ferries sell out daily.

September — locals' favorite

27°C, sea warmest at 23°C. Crowds drop after the first week. If we had to pick one month, this is it.

October & November — the second sweet spot

23–25°C, sea still 22°C, very low crowds outside Halloween week. Apartment prices often 30% cheaper than peak. Ideal for digital nomads booking 2+ weeks.

December — winter sun begins

20–22°C, sea 19°C. Crowds build through the month, peaking at Christmas/New Year. Book early or wait until January 8.

Things to Do in Corralejo: Top Activities 2026

Activities Guide · 7 min read

The best things to do in Corralejo

From Lobos Island boat trips to dunes 4×4 safaris — tested by people who lived here, bookable today.

Activities 7 min read Updated May 2026

In 2025 National Geographic named Corralejo Beach the world's number one — but the sand is only the start. The town sits between the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park (10.5 km of protected dunes) and the volcanic Lobos Island, with reef breaks, kite spots and family attractions filling the days in between.

The essentials: what to book first

If you only have time for a handful of activities, these are the ones locals would book first — in this order.

1. Lobos Island day trip

A 15-minute ferry from Corralejo harbor takes you to an uninhabited volcanic island, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Most tours include snorkeling in turquoise lagoons, a guided walk to the small crater (90-minute round trip), and lunch at the only restaurant on the island.

What to bring: sun cream (no shade), swim gear, water shoes for the rocks, €10 cash for park entry.

Pro tip: the 9am ferry beats the crowds. The 4pm return has the best photos.

2. Corralejo Dunes 4×4 safari

Sunset or sunrise tours across the protected dunes natural park in open 4×4 vehicles. Stops at the highest point for photos, then on toward the Lobos Island viewpoint. Most tours last 3 hours.

Best time: 1 hour before sunset for golden light. Tours from 4pm in winter, 6pm in summer.

3. Surf lessons for beginners

Corralejo is the surf capital of Fuerteventura. ISA-certified schools run group lessons on Flag Beach (Playa de la Bandera), a perfect beginner break with consistent sand-bottom waves. 2-hour sessions include board, wetsuit and shuttle.

What to expect: 30 min theory on the sand, 90 min in the water with an instructor in the lineup. Most students stand up by lesson 2 or 3.

For active travelers

Kitesurfing on Flag Beach

Flag Beach is one of Europe's top kitesurfing spots — steady trade winds 300+ days a year. IKO-certified schools run beginner courses (1–3 days) and rentals for experienced riders.

Snorkeling boat tours

Half-day boat trips to the cleanest snorkeling spots between Corralejo and Lobos Island. Crystal water, fish life, and a stop on a small private cove. Equipment included.

Hiking the Volcán de Bayuyo

Free and DIY. The Bayuyo volcano (271m) is a 1-hour climb just north of town. The crater rim has 360° views over Lobos and the dunes. Best at sunset; bring water.

For families

Acua Water Park

The biggest water park in Fuerteventura, on the main strip into town. 10+ slides, wave pool and kids' area. Best for half-day visits in the morning when queues are short.

Oasis Wildlife Park (Lajares area)

30-minute drive south. Hundreds of animals, parrot shows, camel rides. Often considered the best family day-out in Fuerteventura.

Day trips beyond Corralejo

El Cotillo (35 min by car)

Tiny west-coast village with quieter beaches, sunset cocktail bars, and the best fish restaurants on the island. Perfect afternoon escape.

Lanzarote on the ferry (1h by sea)

Ferry from Corralejo to Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. Day trip option: rent a car on arrival and drive to Timanfaya volcanoes. Same boat ticket, totally different island.

Free things to do

  • Walk the dunes at sunset — start at the Riu Oliva Beach hotel parking
  • Watch the kitesurfers from Flag Beach
  • Visit the lighthouse at Punta del Tostón (north tip)
  • Saturday morning market at the harbor (artisan + food)
  • Free music nights at harbor bars in summer

Quick answers

Is Corralejo good for non-swimmers?

Yes. The town beaches (Playa Chica, Muelle Chico) have calm protected water. The dune beaches are wilder — choose carefully or swim near a lifeguard.

Do I need a car?

For activities with shuttle pickup (most tours), no. For El Cotillo, Lajares, or surf spots in the north, yes — rental from €25/day.

How early should I book?

Lobos Island ferry: 1–2 days ahead in peak season. Dunes safaris: usually fine same-day in low season. Surf/kite lessons: 3–5 days ahead in summer.

Where to Stay in Corralejo: 5 Neighborhoods Compared

Accommodation Guide · 5 min read

Where to stay in Corralejo

Five neighborhoods compared — harbor, dunes, Old Town, surf coast and Centro Alto. Pick the right zone for your trip.

Accommodation 5 min read Updated May 2026

Corralejo is small — just 18,000 residents and roughly 20,000 guest beds — but it packs five very different neighborhoods into a 4 km strip. Where you sleep decides whether your holiday is a quiet sunrise on the dunes or a midnight cocktail two minutes from your door.

Quick answer: where should I stay?

First-time visitors should stay in Corralejo Old Town (Harbor / El Campanario area) — walkable to restaurants, ferries to Lobos Island, and the main beaches. Families: pick the Dunas / Grandes Playas area for space, pools and resort-style stays. Surfers: head north to Majanicho Road / El Cotillo direction. Long stayers and digital nomads: Centro Alto gives you local life at lower rates.

📍 Why this matters

Most visitors arrive with one image in their head: golden dunes against turquoise sea. That image is real — but the dunes start 3 km south of town. Book a hotel near Corralejo and you might walk 25 minutes for a beer. Book in the harbor expecting silence and you'll hear the bars until 2 AM.

1. Old Town & Harbor — for first-time visitors

This is what most people mean when they say "Corralejo." Whitewashed streets running down to a small fishing port, ferries departing for Lobos Island throughout the day, dozens of restaurants serving everything from Canarian papas arrugadas to sushi.

Stay here if: you want to step out of your apartment and be in the middle of everything. You don't have a car. You're staying 3–5 nights and want to maximize what you see.

Don't stay here if: you're a light sleeper and the room faces Calle La Iglesia or the harbor — terrace bars stay open late in season.

What to look for on Booking

  • Distance "0–300 m from harbor"
  • Apartments with sea or harbor view
  • Filter "Apartment" or "Studio" for self-catering flexibility

2. El Campanario — for couples

A 5-minute walk inland from the harbor, El Campanario is a small open-air shopping center surrounded by modern apartment complexes. Calmer than the harbor at night, but you can still walk to dinner in 10 minutes.

Stay here if: you want hotel-level comfort with a self-catering option, you don't mind a short walk to the beach, and you appreciate having a supermarket and pharmacy on your doorstep.

3. Dunas & Grandes Playas — for families and resort lovers

This is the long strip of road heading south from town toward the natural park. Big all-inclusive resorts, vast beaches, and the famous dune landscape are all here. Less walkable — most guests use the hotel shuttle or a rental car for the 15-minute trip into town.

Stay here if: you've got kids, you want a pool and an all-inclusive setup, you came to disconnect rather than explore. The dunes themselves are a 5-minute walk from your hotel.

The big resorts in this area

  • Atlantic Garden Resort — apartments with resort facilities, family-friendly
  • Riu Oliva Beach — all-inclusive directly on the dunes
  • Bahía Real — 5-star, more boutique-feeling

4. Centro Alto — for long stayers

The residential streets uphill from the main avenue. Local supermarkets, kids cycling to school, almost no tourists. Apartments here cost less per week than the harbor and you can walk down to the action in 10 minutes.

Stay here if: you're booking 2+ weeks, you work remotely and need quiet for calls, or you've been to Corralejo before and want the "live like a local" feeling.

5. North Shore & Majanicho Road — for surfers

This isn't strictly Corralejo — it's the road heading northwest toward Majanicho and El Cotillo, with reef breaks and flat-water lagoons along the way. You'll need a rental car or a stay at one of the surf camps with shuttle service.

Stay here if: the trip is built around surfing, kiteboarding or windsurfing. You don't care about restaurants or nightlife — your day starts at dawn at the spot.

Apartment, villa or hotel? A quick decision guide

  • Apartment — most flexible. Kitchen for breakfast, separate bedroom for couples, washing machine. Best value per night for stays of 4+ nights.
  • Villa — best for groups of 4–6 or families wanting a private pool. Higher per-night cost but split between people it's often cheaper than two hotel rooms.
  • Hotel — best for stays of 1–3 nights, all-inclusive lovers, anyone who doesn't want to think about meals.

When to book for best prices

Corralejo is busiest December–February (UK and German winter sun seekers) and July–August (Spanish families). For best deals:

  • Apartments: book 4–8 weeks ahead
  • Resorts (all-inclusive): book 2–3 months ahead
  • Last-minute Oct–Nov & March–April: often 30% cheaper than peak
